Town Centre Mural

Updated: Mar 18, 2020

SBC commissioned a new mural to contribute toward cultural regeneration and place-making in the town centre. The new artwork was created by Hitchin and Stevenage-based Mark Meana and Silvi Noel and installed in Sept 2019. The artwork is inspired by the new town story and reads as a storybook sketch, flowing from left to right and representing past (as seen in the Old Town clock), present, and future. Building blocks can be seen floating toward the future, serving as a metaphor and alluding to our town’s regeneration. The artwork represents the modern, geometric design of the new town, with the three-dimensionality of our built environment reflected in almost cubist-like representations, as seen in the Clock Tower; while the minimalism and monumentalism of the town is represented in a black and white design.

As a whole, it represents and reflects a shared sense of place as Stevenage undergoes change to sympathetically bring it into the 21st century, as demonstrated by the revitalisation of a derelict building.
